A Tortoise and A Tree

In the shade of the palms, burrowed into the sand,
Lived a tortoise I knew who lived off the land
On the beach by the sea in a hole by a tree
That I painted in his company.

"That trunk is too big and those browns are too tan,"
Said the tortoise to me with scorn and demand.
"A picture of me would be better indeed,
In my hole on this beach by the sea.

So I painted his portrait and made him look grand,
Then traded the painting for his plot of sand.
"Great art depends on your subject, you see?
Goodbye and good luck with the tree."

I painted the tortoise again with a man
On the beach by the sea in a hole in the sand.
And covering me was the shade of a tree
By my home by my hand by the sea.

2020 is Fake News

Sanibel
watercolor
4" x 6"

I hope you all got vacuum cleaners and Ferrero Rocher for Christmas.  Happy 2020, or 1924, or whatever you want to call it...it's Monday in the Midwest and I mostly just hope you're happy.

Anyhoo, I "rang in the new year" with sunburn, shrimp, and rum drinks.  I've since returned to reality, but I still have sand between my toes...underneath my socks...and shoes.  To commemorate the fantastic time I had beach bumming, and to offset my rediscovery of Indiana's annual "grey-look," I'll be posting sketches from my vacation for the remainder of January.

The little watercolor above is a pretty good representation of my time in the Sunshine State and features a common motif in my recent collection of watercolor, gouache, and ink drawings.  If you want to buy this little guy, or tomorrow's little guy, or the next thirty little guys, click HERE and leave me a message.

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, doo-dun doo-doo, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
